We're committed to protecting the environment

According to the Ministry for the Environment, there are 3.8 million mobile phones in New Zealand and studies show that 25% of these phones are no longer used. Furthermore, people replace their handsets on average every 18 months which means there are a large number of unused handsets that are either stored or sent to landfill.

If properly recycled, about 90 per cent of materials like cadmium and lead (found in mobile phones) can be recovered to make new products. For example, mobile phone chargers can be recycled to recover copper; and the circuit boards inside the phones can be recycled to recover precious metals like gold and silver.

Telecom’s aim is to be 100% landfill-free for telecommunications consumer products. Mobile phones contain heavy metals and hazardous substances that should not end up in landfills and could potentially cause environmental damage.

As a premium Telecom Partner, Orb Communications is doing everything it can to support this environmental goal.

Each of Orb's stores has a convenient 'Recycling Dump Bin' to give the public an environmentally friendly means of disposing of unwanted telecommunications products.

Orb accepts more than just its own mobile product range.  We also accept:

- Any other company’s mobile phones
- Chargers
- Modems
- Fixed line and cordless consumer products

Telecom collected, for recycling, over 90,000kg of old and unused telecommunication consumer products in 2006/07.

Our recycling partner is Allied Electronic Recovery Worldwide (AER Worldwide). Based in Fremont, California with 18 facilities worldwide, AER is a fully licensed and Basel Convention compliant recycling service provider.

Mobile phones and other telecommunication consumer products handed into Orb Communications stores are reused/recycled:

- Collected from stores by courier
- Transported to Auckland for exporting to AER
- Phones tested and if still operable are refurbished for use in developing countries
